After the debut of the forthcoming R8 Spyder at the International Autoshow in Frankfurt, everyone’s jumping at the chance to see more of this new droptop in action! Here we have a video released by Audi to show off the Sypder and all of the incredible places you can cruise through (or speed through) with the potent V10 amidships in this new convertible.

While we’re of course glad to see the R8 Spyder in its natural habitat we only wish this video carried a little less CG animation of the Sypder. After all, this car’s looks alone are enough to make it look fast!

Enjoy the video

After months of anticipation and many guessing if Audi would actually release it, the day is here and the R8 Spyder has officially been revealed.

Shedding its Coupe brother’s sideblades and sporting a cloth top, the R8 Spyder looks every bit the part of a supercar convertible, dare we say better looking than its cousin the Gallardo? Either way, the R8 Spyder is fast as the Spyder only comes with the 5.2L V10, sporting the same Y-spoke 19 inch wheels found on the V10 Coupe. Visually, the convertible R8 and coupe R8 are nearly identical with the major changes in appearance being the loss of the fixed roof and the carbon/silver sideblades. However, the lack of the sideblades, while taking something very striking away from the coupe but giving the Spyder a very clean, fluid body from the front wheel wells back to the air intakes for the engine on the car’s haunches.
(Hit the jump for a promotional video and full gallery of the R8 Spyder!)

However, despite slick convertible looks, many worry that when performance cars lose their top, they lose their edge. The R8 Spyder? Not so much. only gaining 66 pounds over the coupe, the Spyder has a very minimal weight gain over the coupe compared most other cars who go through a similar conversion. In terms of the straight-line performance, the R8 Spyder still returns a 0 to 60 time of 4.1 seconds and an impressive convertible stat of 19 seconds to open and then close the cloth top at speeds up to 31MPH. Other performance features of the R8 Sypder read like the spec list of cars twice the cost of the Sypder with items like the ceramic brake discs and the double-clutch Rtronic transmission with its own version of launch control for those who want the perfect application of power to all four wheels right off the line. Oh and did we mention that with the big, fat 19 inch tires and magnetically adjusted suspension the R8 Spyder is good for up to 1.2G’s in the corners?

Other features to make you drool are the continued use of the LEDs at both front and rear for the daytime running lamps/accents in the headlamp housings and then LEDs at the back for brake lamps. Moving to the interior, drivers will find themselves nestled right into the silky Nappa leather of the seats. And what a nice place it is to be in the drivers seat! If the V10’s exhaust note behind you isn’t enough, drivers will have the latest MMI system with a 6 disc CD changer, iPod interface and 6.5 inch crisp display that also gives the driver the option of flipping on the rear camera system to ensure that the gorgeous rump of the R8 isn’t dinged on any fire hydrants or valet stands!

All in all, the R8 Sypder looks to be a car that dreams are made of. With the midship V10 pumping out 525HP to all four wheels, the gorgeous, flowing lines of the body and the attention to detail in the stitching of the fine leather blanketing the interior. Many of said this already but every time I look at the Spyder I have to agree - the R8 Spyder should be making other performance cars shake in their Pirellis as this new Audi thunders down the nearest boulevard.

The Audi R8 Spyder 5.2 FSI quattro – Breathtakingly dynamic open-top driving

Audi high-performance sports car with lightweight cloth top

Distinctive styling, carbon fiber body parts

Mid-mounted V10 engine producing 386 kW (525 hp) and exceptional performance

Exceptional performance and breathtaking dynamism coupled with the intense sensations of open-top driving: Audi presents the R8 Spyder 5.2 FSI quattro. Its lightweight cloth top opens and closes fully automatically; several body parts are made of a carbon fiber composite material.

The V10 engine produces 386 kW (525 hp) and launches the open-top two-seater to 100 km/h (62.14 mph) in 4.1 seconds on its way to a top speed of 313 km/h (194.49 mph). Featuring technologies such as the Audi Space Frame (ASF), quattro permanent all-wheel drive, full-LED headlights and with an innovative seatbelt microphone available as an option, the R8 Spyder 5.2 FSI quattro is the new top-of-the-range Audi.

The Audi R8 Spyder 5.2 FSI quattro makes a powerful statement. The sculptured lines of the emotion-packed, high-performance sports car are a fascinating and unique interpretation of its dynamism. Unlike the Coupé, the Spyder does not have sideblades behind the doors. The side panels and the large cover over the storage compartment for the cloth top are made of a carbon fiber composite. Two arched cowls, which extend to the spoiler lip and include large, integrated air vents, give the rear of the open-top two-seater a powerful profile.

Like every open-top Audi, the R8 Spyder 5.2 FSI quattro has a cloth top – an uncompromising solution for a high-performance sports car. The soft top’s approximate weight is a mere 30 kilograms (66.14 lb); it thus keeps the vehicle’s total weight and center of gravity low. The top takes up little space when open and is a harmonious design element when closed. It tapers off to two slim fins extending to the trailing edge of the car, emphasizing the elongated silhouette.

The electrohydraulic soft top opens and closes in 19 seconds, even while driving at speeds up to 50 km/h (31.07 mph). When opened, it folds like a Z into its storage compartment over the V10 engine. The compartment cover opens and closes automatically. The heated glass window, which is separate from the cloth top, is lowered into the bulkhead. It can be independently raised and lowered at the press of a switch, with the top up or down. An additional net-like wind deflector comes standard and can be latched into the bulkhead behind the seats in two easy steps.

The top, which comprises an outer skin of a leakproof textile fabric and the headliner, is fully compatible with high-speed driving. When driving at moderate speeds with the top up, interior noise levels in the R8 Spyder are barely higher than in the Coupé. The bulkhead includes integrated rollover protection in the form of two strong, spring-tensioned plates. Head/thorax side bags in the backrests protect the passengers in the event of a side impact. Full-size airbags stand at the ready in the event of a head-on collision. In a rear-end collision, the integral head restraint system reduces the risk of whiplash injuries.

In the version with manual transmission, the R8 Spyder 5.2 FSI quattro weighs only 1,720 kilograms thanks primarily to its aluminum Audi Space Frame (ASF) body. Despite reinforcements in the area of the sills, the center tunnel, the rear wall, the floor pan and the A- and B-pillars, the body weighs only 216 kilograms (476.2 lb) – just 6 kilograms (13.23 lb) more than that of the R8 Coupé. The high stiffness of the ASF body, which includes an integrated engine frame of ultra-lightweight magnesium, provides the foundation for the car’s dynamic handling and superior safety.

Close attention to detail: the design
Numerous details demonstrate that the Audi designers put their hearts into the design of the R8 Spyder 5.2 FSI quattro. The air inlets in the nose, which direct air across the three radiators, and the lip of the front skirt are painted high-gloss black. The struts in the broad, low, single-frame grille are finely coated with chrome. The standard full-LED headlights are technical works of art. Their reflectors resemble open mussel shells; the daytime running lights appear to be a homogeneous strip, but actually comprise 24 individual LEDs that form a curve at the lower edge of the headlight.

The full-LED headlights from Audi are unmatched by its international competitors. Light-emitting diodes are used for the low beams, the high beams, the daytime running lights and the turn signals. With a color temperature of 6,000 Kelvin, the LED light is very similar to daylight, making it easier on the eyes when driving at night. Additional strengths include excellent light distribution, long service life and extremely low energy consumption.

The side sills of the R8 Spyder 5.2 FSI quattro are broad and angular. V10 badges on the flanks allude to the power of the engine. A dark surface between the rear lights emphasizes the car’s width. The chambers of the lights are colored dark red, with LEDs generating a three-dimensional light pattern. The exhaust system ends in two large, oval tailpipes, and the fully lined underbody ends in an upturned diffuser. The rear spoiler extends automatically at higher speeds.

Audi offers the R8 Spyder 5.2 FSI quattro with a choice of three colors for the top. The body is available in eleven paint finishes, with metallic and pearl effect finishes standard. The windshield frame is coated with anodized aluminum.

Sporty luxury: the interior
The open-top two-seater from Audi features a generously spacious interior. The three-spoke leather multifunction sport steering wheel is flattened at the bottom as in a race car, and the low-mounted, electrically adjustable seats guide and support the body perfectly.

Quality of fit and finish is extraordinary and the controls are clear and logical. The standard driver information system includes a lap timer for recording lap times. The instruments and the gear lever knob feature red rings. The pedals, the footrests and the shift paddles of the optional R tronic are in aluminum look. Highlighting the list of standard equipment are a generous full-leather package featuring Fine Nappa leather, an excellent sound system from Bang & Olufsen, a deluxe automatic air conditioning system and heated seats. Six different interior colors are available.

Many additional fine features documents the top status of the Audi R8 Spyder 5.2 FSI quattro. The leather for the seats are colored with pigments that reflect the infrared component of sunlight, which keeps the seats up to 20 degrees Celsius cooler.

Door sill strips coated with aluminum and adorned with black satin finish applications impart an air of luxurious sportiness. Three storage compartments are integrated into the rear bulkhead, one of which contains the optional CD changer or Audi music interface, if desired. There is a front compartment for 100 liters (3.53 cu ft) of luggage.

The latest version of the navigation system plus with MMI operating logic is also standard in the R8 Spyder 5.2 FSI quattro. It features higher resolution and particularly fast route calculation. The system’s most visible new feature is the high-resolution, 6.5-inch display. The topographic view can be scrolled in any direction. The system can be combined optionally with a rearview camera that serves as a parking aid.

Audi offers custom extras, such as exclusive leather packages and special inlays. A worldwide first is the optional seatbelt microphone for the hands-free unit, which makes it possible to talk on the phone even with the top down on the highway. Three small, flat microphones are integrated into both seatbelts. At least one of them is ideally positioned relative to the speaker when the belt is on. There is a fourth microphone in the windshield frame.

Uncompromising power: the engine
The Audi R8 Spyder 5.2 FSI quattro, which was developed in cooperation with quattro GmbH, dazzles with uncompromising performance. The V10 engine with the aluminum crankcase, much of which is hand-built, follows in the grand motorsports tradition at Audi. The normally aspirated engine produces 530 Nm (390.91 lb-ft) of torque at 6,500 rpm. Peak output of 386 kW (525 hp) is reached at 8,000 rpm, and the rev limit is not reached until 8,700 rpm. Specific power output is 100.9 hp per liter of displacement; each hp only needs to move 3.3 kilograms (7.28 lb) of weight.

Performance reflects this awesome potential: 0 – 100 km/h (62.14 mph) in 4.1 seconds; 0 – 200 km/h (124.27 mph) in 12.7 seconds; top speed is 313 km/h (194.49 mph) with the six-speed manual transmission. As load and revs increase, the engine unfolds the rich, unmistakable Audi ten-cylinder sound – a powerful, throaty roar with musical undertones.

The 5.2-liter engine features FSI direct fuel injection. The high 12.5:1 compression ratio that this enables contributes to the high performance and good fuel efficiency. Equipped with a manual transmission, the R8 Spyder 5.2 FSI quattro consumes an average of 14.9 liters of fuel per 100 km (15.79 US mpg) – a good figure given its power. With R tronic, this figure improves to 13.9 liters (16.92 US mpg). Dry sump lubrication, another motorsports technology, ensures that the supply of oil is maintained even at the maximum lateral acceleration of 1.2 g.

The Audi R8 Spyder 5.2 FSI is also available with an optional automatic six-speed transmission. The R tronic offers a normal and a sport program as well as a fully automatic and a manual mode. The manual mode allows the driver to make lightning-fast gear changes using the joystick on the center tunnel or with the paddles on the steering wheel. The open-air sports car also comes with “Launch Control” – a program that manages engagement of the clutch perfectly to maximize acceleration at start.

The quattro permanent all-wheel drive features a central viscous coupling and distributes power to all four wheels with a heavy rear bias. It works together with the locking differential on the rear axle to provide significantly greater traction, stability, cornering speed and precision. It is the superior technology – in particular for a high-performance sports car.

Dazzling performance: the chassis
The Audi R8 Spyder 5.2 FSI quattro has a 2.65-meter (8.69-ft) wheelbase and a 43:57 axle load distribution. Like in a race car, there are double triangular wishbones made of aluminum at all four wheels. The hydraulic rack-and-pinion power steering conveys highly precise road contact.

The chassis is tuned for good comfort, thanks in part to standard Audi magnetic ride technology. This uses magnetic fields in the shock absorbers to adjust their response to road conditions within milliseconds and adapt to the driver’s style. The driver can choose between two base characteristics. A sports suspension with conventional shock absorbers is available as an option.

The R8 Spyder 5.2 FSI quattro rolls on 19-inch wheels of 10-spoke Y design. The front rims are shod with 235/35 tires, with 295/30 tires at the back. 305/30 tires are optionally available. The brakes offer impressive performance: The four discs are internally ventilated and perforated, with eight-piston calipers up front and four-piston calipers at the back. Optionally available from Audi are oversized carbon fiber-ceramic discs that are extremely lightweight, robust and long-lived. The ESP stabilization system has a Sport mode and can also be completely deactivated. The brake system includes an assist function that facilitates starting on gradients.

The Audi R8 Spyder 5.2 FSI quattro is built by quattro GmbH at the Neckarsulm plant. The vehicle, including the ASF, is largely hand-built. The open-top two-seater will be launched in Germany in the first quarter of 2010; sales will start in the coming days. Its base price will be 156,400 euros.

You heard it. Audi is already planning a more hardcore version of the R8 after only recently releasing the beastly R8 V10 - which is already producing a hair over the 500HP mark. However, instead of just cranking up horsepower to improve straight line performance, Audi will be putting the R8 on a diet.

As part of the diet, Autocar hints at the idea of simplified R8’s will much less luxury trim to cut back on weight meaning no radio, thinner seats, more carbon fiber. Autocar also features some spy shots that show the addition of a rear wing in place to keep the rear of the car planted thereby increasing rear grip. The rear wing is paired up with two small front wings attached to the front bumper to increase down force at the front allowing for better turn-in on corners. The spy photos show the to-be-expected testing of the new R8 on the Nurburgring crunching through laps to sort out the car. We’re predicting that power will not increase much but with significant weight savings and an increase in down force will surely turn faster lap times over the standard R8 and R8 V10. You can surely bet that the R8 V10 “Clubsport” as it’s been dubbed will cost a few more coin over the $146,000 price of the R8 V10.

Watch this space for more on the R8 V10 and its diet!

Video has been taken of an Audi in it’s natural, quattro-driven turf: the epic Nurburgring in the soaking-wet rain. As we previously reported, the R8 convertible(aka Spider) will only come with the V10 with the 4.2L V8 from the RS4 not a option for the top-tiered convertible. That said, lucky owners of the R8 Spider will have more than enough horsepower to make up for only one engine with 525HP and 391 ft-lbs of torque. The 60MPH mark can be expected to arrive in a short 4 seconds and thankfully, the R8 Spider is only a few short months away when it debuts in September at the Frankfurt Autoshow.

Well, we say, why not take some time to listen to the incredible exhaust note of the R8 Spider in its 5.2L V10 glory to help pass the next few months until the debut.

We all know how great the R8 looks on the outside, what’s not to like? forward cabin, mid-engined V8, and an incredible profile with its side blades. However, what makes the R8 an outstanding car isn’t necessarily what’s on the outside that counts but also what’s on the inside. It’s rare that you get to see what lies under the skin of a super car such as the R8 unless you’re over on Wrecked Exotics checking out pictures of a recently written-off R8 .

However, our friends over at Jalopnik have started a new feature called Supercar Teardown which features pictures of just that: supercars being torn down for repairs and maintenance or upgrades. Some previously featured whips were the Porsche Carrera GT, Ferrari F40, Porsche 959, and Lamborghini Countach. However, now Audi is joining the cast of elite carmakers with these pictures of the R8 being taken apart for some maintenance work. You can see the whole of the 4.2L V8 lump as well as the large cross-drilled brake discs used to slow the big V8. We’re personally looking forward to the R8 V10 teardown once the R8 comes out later this fall.

To see many more pictures of this torn down R8, head over to Jalopnik to check out their gallery.

For those who are car fans and own an Xbox or Xbox 360 there can be little doubt that they’ve heard of the Forza Motorsport series. The original Forza Motorsports game was released in mid-2005 as a sort of Microsoft Xbox answer to the highly successful, highly acclaimed Sony Playstation racing series Gran Turismo. Well, Forza managed to answer the challenge of Gran Turismo by providing damage modeling, a wide array of cars and competitive series and tracks while allowing the player to both decorate their car by any means they saw fit as well as set up and buy upgrades for their vehicles. Coupled with the Xbox Live system, players could also download new paint schemes and vehicles to outfit their garage for both the singleplayer and multiplayer modes.

After a successful sequel to the original, Turn 10, the firm that developed the Forza Motorsports series, is bringing out the 3rd game of the series and featuring one of the hottest cars of 2009: the 5.2L Audi R8 V10. To celebrate the 3rd installment in the series as well as get fans excited for the release in October, Turn 10 has come up with an interesting contest allowing the fans to personally design the paint scheme for the R8 V10 similar to the design studio that is found within the game itself.

Hit the jump for how to enter the contest and see what you could win!

The winner of the contest? Well, after a panel of judges determines the best 5 designs, and the top 5 designs are then voted on via an online poll, the winner will have their design posted to Xbox Live as exclusive downloadable content. The 5 runners up will automatically receive an Xbox 360 wireless racing wheel.

If you’d like to enter the contest and prove you’ve got the best design, then hit this jump to steer over to the Forza homepage and download the template. Once done, submit your best template to Forza and sit back and wait to win the steering wheel! The contest began June 2nd and ends as of midnight, June 14th. Keep in mind that the designs must be less than 26 megabytes and in .psd (Adobe Photoshop) file format when submitted.

I was going to use the title that “Two Red Cars don’t make a right” but that was just too cheesy.

Anyway, what we see here is quite an anomaly, not that it’s two supercars that have been wrecked but that it’s two supercars that have been wrecked by each other. That’s right, in Fu Zhou, China while this red Ferrari 599 GTB was being followed by the red Audi R8 when traffic suddenly halted, causing the Ferrari to stop short and the Audi stop somewhere in the middle of the bumper of the Ferrari. Fortunately though, the occupants of both cars only received minor injuries as a result of the accident.

However, from a quick estimate, we’re looking at an accident worth between $650,000 and $750,000 between the Ferrari and Audi - my guess is the R8 driver may have a hard time getting insured ever again after this!

Hit the jump over to Wrecked Exotics to see more on this accident.

Once in service in the coming European GT and sports car championships, the R8 LMS will be tearing across tracks like the Nurburgring, Spa Francorchamps, Misano, Mugello, and Hockenheim, Expect to see one of the first R8 LMS GT3’s roll onto the track on April 10th at Oschersleben with Phoenix entering the R8 in a long distance enduro at the famed Nurburgring a week earlier.

Audi Sport Italia receives the Audi R8 LMS with chassis number 101. The symbolic handover of the first customer car was made on Tuesday in the Audi Forum Neckarsulm. Emilio Radaelli, Team Manager of Audi Sport Italia, accepted the R8 LMS from Head of Audi Motorsport Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich.

“In the future our new customer sport program represents Audi Sport’s third business field alongside our factory programs in the DTM and in sport prototypes,” explains Head of Audi Motorsport Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich. “2009 is a test and development year during which we aim to collect as much experience as possible with the R8 LMS. We are delighted to be able to do this with teams with which we are familiar and have established a solid partnership over the years.”

In the 2009 season, Abt Sportsline, Argo Racing, ORECA, Phoenix Racing and Team Rosberg also trust the new GT3 sports car from AUDI AG. Audi Sport will start the delivery to customers for the 2010 season from fall 2009.

The six customer teams plan to race in five European GT3 championships as well as in the 24-hour race at the Nürburgring for which Audi Sport has developed an endurance version of the R8 LMS.

Twelve R8 LMS sports cars will be in action in more than 40 events at almost 30 European circuits throughout the 2009 motorsport season. “This allows us to collect a lot of experience which will flow into the development of the R8 LMS,” says Oliver Straube who is responsible for marketing of the R8 LMS at Audi Sport.

With the GT3 race version of the R8, Audi Sport developed a racing sports car specifically for use in customer sport with the GT3 race version. Pure “factory” entries are not planned with the R8 LMS.

The assembly of the race cars including the body shells is made by quattro GmbH in Heilbronn-Biberach in a factory hall specifically for the customer sport program. The Audi factory in Györ, Hungary, deliver the V10 engines.

That title should be followed by …”on ice.” Historically, most car folk know it’s difficult to drift an all-wheel drive car due to its natural adversion to letting the wheels slip. On Top Gear and Fifth Gear Jeremy Clarkson and Tiff Needell, respectively, tried very hard to step out the rear of the Audi R8 with only limited success.

Well, Matt Farah of Garage 419 fame has trumped both of them by taking the Audi to place where no car, whether rear-wheel or all-wheel driven, can get grip, a frozen lake. I’m truly jealous that they get go out and do something like this…but I’m still glad to live in balmy, sunny Florida!
