While the A5 Sportback itself is a very new model, Audi has done one better and one-upped itself by surprising the world with the S5 Sportback a few weeks before the International Auto Show in Frankfurt, Germany - traditionally a big venue for European car manufacturers to show off concepts and upcoming models.

As luck would have it - or the advent of the internet has provided - we’ve been given a sneak preview of the upcoming S5 Sportback. For those that may not remember, the S5 Sportback is based off of the A5 Sportback. The latter vehicle being a 5 door coupe that cleverly disguises its rear hatch as a sort of integrated trunk versus the standard look of a hatchback or wagon. However, while taking on an additional 2 passenger doors and rear hatch, the A5 Sportback also retains the heavy design cues of the A5 coupe at the front, rear and sides with a high, coupe-like beltline. Other details of the S5 Sportback are somewhat as to be expected. With the S5 coupe transitioning from the 4.2L V8 to the B8 S4’s supercharged 330HP V6 with direct injection, expect the S5 Sportback to carry the same engine tucked up under its nose.

Hit the jump for a full press release by Audi!

Performance of the bigger coupe/sedan Sportback with it’s delicious superchaged V6 puts the 0 to 60 sprint in the mid-5 second range, only slightly off-pace from the more lithe S4 sedan. Even more impressive, the average city/highway fuel consumption of about 24.9 miles per gallon, an impressive figure for a car that can carry 4 adults comfortably as well as there luggage at quite a rapid rate. Other nice features to be expected on the S5 Sportback are Drive Select as found on most newer Audi’s such as well as the new torque vectoring differential that debuted on the B8 S4 within the last few months, guaranteed to provide the handling needed when the driver demands the S5 Sportback perform through turns.

Still no word on if the A5 Sportback or it’s beefier S5 equivalent will make it stateside. However, we’re hypothesizing that their could still be a chance for the U.S. market. to receive the Sportback. Why? Well, with the loss of the Audi S4 Avant due to weaker sales, the S5 Sportback could provide a great bridge between those looking for performance but still require more cargo capacity than that of the S4 sedan, not to mention the styling cues that are specific to the S5 coupes. Personally, we’re hoping to see the S5 Sportback come stateside if we’re not going to receive the S4 Avant, this could be enough to keep hardcore fans happy!

Press Release:

Dynamics and Efficiency: Three New Models at the IAA

The S5 Sportback uses a powerful, supercharged V6
A4 3.0 TDI clean diesel quattro with stunningly clean exhaust
The A3 1.2 TFSI consumes just 5.5 liters of fuel per 100 km (42.77 mpg)

Audi will unveil three new vehicles at Frankfurt’s International Motor Show (IAA): the remarkably dynamic S5 Sportback, the extremely low-emission A4 3.0 TDI clean diesel quattro, and the especially efficient A3 1.2 TFSI. These innovative engines boast some very different key data, yet they share something in common: They embody Audi’s conviction that dynamics and efficiency are not mutually exclusive; on the contrary, they go hand in hand and are mutually complementary.

Elegant dynamics: Audi S5 Sportback
The S5 Sportback is the pinnacle of the new Sportback model line. This elegant, five-door coupé is propelled by a three-liter V6 with a mechanical compressor. From a displacement of 2,995 cm3 (182.77 in3), the small turbo engine delivers 245 kW (333 hp) and 440 Nm (324.53 lb.-ft.) of torque between 2,900 and 5,300 rpm. The S5 Sportback sprints from 0 to 100 km/h (62.14 mph) in 5.4 seconds [provisional figure]; its top speed of 250 km/h (155.34 mph) is limited by an electronic governor. It averages just 9.7 liters of fuel per 100 km (24.25 mpg) [provisional figures] - the best in this power-output category.

Concerning the powertrain, the Audi S5 Sportback similarly underscores its superiority: a seven-speed S tronic dual-clutch transmission and quattro permanent all-wheel drive are standard equipment. Upon request, Audi will include the sport differential. It variably distributes power on the rear axle between the rear wheels. This new “top model” has a sportily configured chassis with 18-inch aluminum wheels fitted with 245/40 tires; black brake calipers bear S5 emblems at the front. Speed-dependent servotronic steering is also standard.

Small yet striking exterior and interior features visually distinguish the Audi S5 Sportback. Equipment highlights include electrically adjustable S sports seats covered with Silk Nappa leather. Sales of the Audi S5 Sportback will start in Spring 2010; its basic price will be 57,900 euros.

Extremely clean: Audi A4 3.0 TDI clean diesel quattro
Audi debuted the 3.0 TDI clean diesel engine in its large Q7 SUV; now, the world’s cleanest diesel technology will also be available in the best-selling A4.

A package of technologies boasts an array of innovative solutions for engines and the after-treatment of exhaust gas.

At the engine, a new common-rail injection system (which generates up to 2,000 bars of pressure), innovative pressure sensors in the combustion chamber, and an especially high-performance exhaust recirculating system collectively ensure a highly efficient and low-emission combustion process. A novel DeNOX catalytic converter, integrated within the end of the exhaust system, reduces residual nitrogen oxides. Just upstream of it, a pump injects an additive named AdBlue into the hot exhaust flow; there, this aqueous solution decomposes into ammonia - which splits the nitrogen oxides into nitrogen and water.

The A4 3.0 TDI clean diesel quattro already complies with the emission limits of the EU’s Euro 6 standard, expected to become law in 2014. It is also very fuel-efficient, averaging only 6.7 liters (Avant: 6.8 liters) of fuel per 100 km (35.11 and 34.59 miles per U.S. gallon). And this TDI engine is indeed a powerful performer, needing only 6.2 seconds (Avant: 6.3 seconds) to go from zero to 100 km/h (62.14 mph). Top speed is electronically governed to 250 km/h (155.34 mph).

In conjunction with a six-speed tiptronic and quattro permanent all-wheel drive, this vehicle guarantees a high degree of comfort and superior traction.

Efficient Downsizing: Audi A3 and A3 Sportback 1.2 TFSI
Downsizing is a cornerstone of Audi’s efficiency strategy - and Audi is relentlessly committed. The A3 model line will soon introduce yet another turbocharged gasoline engine featuring lower displacement. It unites maximum performance with minimum consumption.

Designed from scratch, the new 1.2 TFSI generates 77 kW (105 hp) from a displacement of 1,197 cm3 (73.05 in3). And as is typical of Audi, turbocharging and direct gasoline injection once again perfectly comprise a technological one-two punch. Thanks to an aluminum crankcase, this four-cylinder engine weighs just 89.5 kilograms (197.31 pounds); this remarkably low weight also boosts its efficiency.

The 1.2 TFSI has been optimized to minimize friction. Eight valves are actuated by a single camshaft. A common-rail system injects the fuel. An electric control valve operates the turbocharger’s wastegate valve; boost pressure builds up spontaneously and scavenging losses drop.

This small engine generates 175 Nm (129.07 lb.-ft.) of torque between just 1,500 and 3,500 rpm. It propels the three-door A3 1.2 TFSI from 0 to 100 km/h (0 to 62.14 mph) in 11.1 seconds; the Sportback, in 11.3 seconds. Both versions reach a top speed of 190 km/h (118.06 mph) and, on average, consume just 5.5 liters of fuel per 100 km (42.77 mpg) - emitting just 127 grams of CO2 per kilometer (204.39 g/mile).

Sales of the A3 and A3 Sportback 1.2 TFSI will begin in the first quarter of 2010. The new engine will initially be paired with front-wheel drive and a six-speed manual transmission.

As we’ve mentioned in the recent past, Audi is currently working to achieve an overall lighter weight from its upcoming vehicles. One of the first vehicles expected to benefit from extreme weight savings is the upcoming Audi Quattro revival. As we’ve also mentioned before, Audi is planning to resurrect the car which launched the brand from a quirky West German manufacturer to a company who was competing on the world stage with the other large German carmakers.

To celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Ur-Quattro(original Quattro) Audi is converting the S5 to a be a throw back model. Originally slated for a 2010 release date, aligning with the 30th anniversary of the release of the original Quattro. However, as the economic climate has spiraled further and further into turmoil, Audi had decided to play it safe and as a result, the Ur-Quattro descendent has been pushed back to 2012 date. However, while the delay in the release of the model is disappointing, the rumored specs of the car certainly aren’t.

As expected, permanent all-wheel-drive will be present via quattro to push power to all four wheels from a turbocharged V6 pushing out about 425HP. While this isn’t earth shattering horsepower, the power deficit is more than made up for with the weight that Audi is shaving from the S5. It’s expected that the S5 Quattro( named Project Anniversario) will weigh in around 1,400kg or about 3,100 lbs - far below the current weight of near 4,300 bls. Other rumors about about Project Anniversario are the possible use of a modified version of the turbocharged 5-cylinder engine used in the TTRS or hybrid drivetrain incorporating regenerative energy technology to keep the new Quattro somewhat “green.”

Watch this space as we learn more about the release of Project Anniversario and what the official specs will be!

The official pictures of the A5 and S5 convertibles have been released giving everyone a glimpse of what we can expect to see on the roads of Europe this Spring/Summer and later this Fall for the U.S.

Buyers stateside can expect to see the same engine line-up as offered in the A5/S5 coupe with the 3.2 FSi V6 in the A5 and the supercharged 3.0TFSi V6 for those that want extra power with the extra style of the new convertible. Europeans will get a more assorted engine line-up with the 1.8TFSi and two diesels in the 3.0TDi and 2.7TDi form.

Other features of the new ‘verts are automatic seatbelt extenders, fold-down rear seats, and the very slick anti-solar heating leather seating surfaces to reduce heat build up in the seats when the top is down. Other options include Audi’s Drive Select system, which is the ultra-desirable 3-way adjustable suspension, 18 inch wheels and the optional S-tronic 7-speed transmission.

From these pictures, this pair of convertibles look as good with their tops down as the coupes do with their fixed roofs so hit the jump to read the full press release from Audi and a gallery of these new drop-tops.

Official Press Release

Audi A5 and S5 Cabriolet – the joy of open-top driving

Dynamic, confident and stunning – the new A5 Cabriolet from Audi is emotionally evocative. The four-seater with the fabric top combines a distinctly sporty character with the fascination of open-top driving, refined comfort and a great everyday utility. Five efficient engines, an agile suspension and a wide range of high-end options make the new Audi the most attractive convertible in the mid-sized segment.

Delivery will begin in the second quarter of 2009. Prices start at 37,300 euros for the entry-level 1.8 TFSI model with 118 kW (160 hp), which will follow somewhat later.

Crowning the new model series is the S5 Cabriolet. The letter “S” traditionally stands for supreme sportiness – for dynamics, performance and power, but also for amazing efficiency. Powering the S5 Cabriolet is a newly developed, supercharged three-liter V6 that pumps out 245 kW (333 hp) for superior performance.

Like all Audi convertibles, the open-top A5 also has a lightweight fabric top that endows it with a silhouette of dynamic elegance. The fully automatic top opens in just 15 seconds. Audi also offers an optional acoustic top with an intermediate layer of insulating foam that reduces wind noise almost to the sedan level.

When opened, the Audi A5 Cabriolet top folds down so effectively that very little trunk space is used up – leaving 320 liters (11.30 cubic ft) of unused storage volume, clearly the best value in its field of competitors. The soft top compartment lowers automatically when the top is opened. Equally useful is the fold-down rear seat backrest and the large pass-through between the luggage compartment and the interior, which increases the storage volume to a generous 750 liters (26.49 cubic ft).

Rounding out the comfortable character of the four-seater’s interior are automatic seatbelt extenders for the front seats and the optionally available head-level heating. A special coating on the optional leather seats reduces solar heating. The A5 Cabriolet seats four comfortably. The refined ambience combines with perfect ergonomics to convey an atmosphere of sporty elegance. Ultra-high-strength steels and selective reinforcements of the body ensure high rigidity and crash safety.

The A5 Cabriolet is being launched with three gasoline engines and two diesel engines ranging between 132 kW (180 hp) and 195 kW (265 hp). All five power plants are fueled via direct fuel injection; four of them use turbocharging. Available powertrains include a six-speed manual, the continuously variable multitronic and the new, lightning-fast seven-speed S tronic. In addition to front-wheel drive, Audi also offers quattro permanent all-wheel drive for the higher-power engines. The innovative sport differential, which variably distributes power between the rear wheels, is optionally available for even greater dynamics and driving pleasure.

Fascinating dynamics: Audi drive select
The perfect addition to this technology package is the Audi drive select vehicle dynamics system, which enables the driver to chose among three different engine maps controlling the characteristics of the fuel feed, the shifting points of the seven-speed S tronic or the multitronic, and the boost provided by the servotronic steering system. If the car is equipped with the MMI operating interface, a fourth, freely programmable map is available. Additional technologies available include adaptive control of the shock absorbers and variable-ratio dynamic steering.

The new Audi A5 Cabriolet features a rich array of equipment in addition to the fully automatic top, including an automatic climate-control system and a CD audio system. Highlights from the long list of options include the innovative driver assist systems and the latest generation MMI operating interface, which offers many attractive navigation and entertainment features.

As the dynamic top-of-the-line model of the new production series, the S5 Cabriolet occupies a very special position. Its three-liter TFSI – a V6 with mechanical supercharger – unfolds its 245 kW (333 hp) and 440 Nm (324.53 lb-ft) of torque with impressive results: It responds tenaciously to the throttle and delivers excellent driving performance. The quattro drivetrain, a sport suspension with 18-inch wheels and a number of special equipment details underscore the athletic character of the Audi S5 Cabriolet.

The equipment, specifications, and prices stated herein refer to the model range offered for sale in Germany. Subject to change without notice; errors and omissions excepted.
