Word on the street( from Fast Lane Daily!) is this picture captures a 2012 RS4. In recent months, there have been many rumors circulating about a possible successor to the B7 RS4. The primary rumor has been that there will not be a a B8 platform RS4 possibly due to the fact that an RS5 coupe has been at the forefront of quattro GmbH’s minds as of late.

As a result, we’re prone to think this isn’t really an RS4 test mule. If you look closely at the picture, you can tell this is a facelifted C6 A6 sedan front the tail lamps as well as the overall size of the car. What should be noted are the bolted-on wheel arches. Interestingly enough, the arches don’t resemble that of the RS6 that carries the more boxy design at both front and rear arches. Also, the car clearly has Colorado state tags which wouldn’t make sense for a full RS model to be tested first in the U.S. before being caught undergoing heavy testing around Germany or at the very least Ingolstadt. That said, we’re thinking this is probably a test mule for a tuning group as the A6 looks almost entirely stock with the exception of the wheel arches and exhaust.

So what do you guys thing? Is this the real deal and some sort of secret RS or standard model test mule or is it just something like a tuning group’s car or an enthusiast gone too far?

The current, facelifted C6 platform A6 has some controversy behind its naming for the 3.0T. “T” typically stands for Turbo on Audi’s however, the new 3.0L V6 is a forced induction engine that is supercharged, not turbocharged. So, many have taken issue with the A6 3.0T not being an A6 3.0S for supercharged. Seems Autoblog caught onto that in their recent review of the Audi A6 3.0TFSI.

The current 3.0TFSI A6 is both facelifted on the outside and under its skin with the revised supercharged engine and a re-worked quattro system that splits torque as 40 to the front and 60 to the rear, something that is a big step forward in terms of performance. Autoblog goes on to say:

The A6’s clear métier is to cruise the Autobahn at elevated speeds in surefooted comfort, and while we didn’t have the opportunity to play with the A6 in inclement weather, past Quattros have always done an outstanding job of maintaining a stable trajectory no matter the conditions. As A6s (and 5000s before them) have done for the past quarter-century, the slick aerodynamic shape results in admirably low levels of wind noise, making this Audi a very relaxing place to cover long distances. The suspension also does an excellent job of soaking up the expansion joints, frost heaves and potholes that typify Northern roads without ever feeling floaty or out-of-sorts.

BMWBlog has posted a comparison done by Autobild on the facelifted A6 V8, BMW 550 V8 and the very newly designed Mercedes E500. Autobild’s comparison takes an outside look at the new mid-size German sedans from the perspective of exterior design and onto interior design. This is an especially important comparison for Mercedes as it’s new E class must stand up the pressures of the continued success of the BMW 5 Series as well as the continued growth of Audi’s A6 within this luxury segment.

Exterior

The exterior comparison pits the radical design cues from the E60 5 Series against the facelifted yet conservative styling of the A6 and the nicely refreshed E class from Mercedes. This segment has a lot of variety with the A6 looking very much like an evolved C5 A6, the Bangle-shaped 5 Series really setting itself apart and the brand new E class taking bits of it’s big brother the S class’s design cues while still retaining a profile that very much resembles the outgoing E class.

Hit the jump for more information and more pictures from Autobild’s beautiful gallery.

Interior

On the inside, the cars continue their styling cues to set themselves apart from one another. With systems like MMI, COMAND, and i-Drive now standard, Audi and Mercedes have had more of an opportunity to better integrate these systems into the flow of the console from the driver’s to passenger’s side - something BMW is likely to rectify in it’s 2011 5 Series. Audi also stays conservative compared with the BMW in terms of the shift knob of their automatic transmissions with BMW’s more avant garde styling. What is unfortunate is the use of a column shifter for a transmission on the part of Mercedes, something that hasn’t really pleased many in this segment in recent years. However, overall, these interiors are all a wonderful place to sit and it’s always good to see the competition keeping things on edge in the closely contended mid-size luxury segment.

Do you like the new A6 3.0T? For those of you who watched the Super Bowl or have been on Audi’s homepage lately then you know Jason Statham is a fan. However, Matt Farah and the boys over at Garage 419 have also found a new, Statham-esque appreciation for the new, facelifted A6 with it’s potent, supercharged V6.

In the spirit of the Transporter series for which Jason Statham and Audi have now become inextricably linked, Matt takes the new A6 on his own Transporter mission by converting the Audi’s backseat into a lobster tank ala what you see in any Red Lobster foyer. Aside from the obviously spacious rear seating in the A6, it’s worth noting the beautiful two-tone interior, revised grill work and the addition of LED’s along with the new 3.0 blown V6 that can be seen in this video along with the intoxicating V6 exhaust coupled with it’s supercharger whine.

Check out the video below of the new A6 and the early demise of a poor lobster.
