Audi at 12 Hours of Sebring update #1

Today, the flag dropped on the 57th 12 Hours of Sebring endurance race in Sebring, Florida.

 

This is a particularly important race for Audi so lets see how we’re doing with the new Audi R15 TDI as it moves through its first race in this opener of the 2009 American Le Mans Series (ALMS) season.  As we mentioned in a previous post, Acura had set pole position above the battling Audi R15 TDI and Peugeot 908HDi. However, at the drop of the flag, everything can change.

Currently, Sebastien Bourdais is out in front in the Peugeot 908HDi leading the race with a little over an 3.3 second jump over Tom Kristensen who is slowly closing the gap on first place in his-all new Audi R15 TDI. So, it’s still a battle of the diesels for first place in the LMP1 field. The other Peugeot 908 driven by Christian Klien is already in the pits for a lengthy stop only 30 minutes into the race. Peugeot is reporting problems with the air conditioning systems within the car, something that can definitely affect driver endurance and moral in the South Florida heat.  Audi seems to have it right with its open top cars, especially as they’re running 2nd and 3rd with Scott Dixon, the pole setter, in his Acura LMP1 car giving chase in 4th place.
